Welcome to the Badminton Branch of the Royal British Legion On behalf of the President, Committee and members of the Royal British Legion, Badminton and District Branch welcomes you to our website. Through this website we hope to provide both the general public, and our existing members, with a better understanding of the role of the Royal British Legion, the support it offers to ex servicemen and women, and how you can support us. The Legion's work is as vital today as it has ever been, offering support and assistance to thousands of ex servicemen and women, and their families, as well as to our serving members of the armed forces, currently engaged in missions across the globe. We would like to thank the British public for their support over the years, and ask that you continue to assist us in the coming years. Richard Yeadon -
Branch Chairman

The military Covenant and how best to honour our Armed Forces and their families The following email has been sent out by Steve Webb MP to raise the issue of how best to honour our Armed Forces and their families. If anyone ha any suggestions please email Steve Webb using the email address mentioned below. The purpose of this e-mail is to ask for your thoughts on how we should best honour the commitment and sacrifice of those who serve the nation in our armed forces along with their families. One of the changes I have noticed over the last fifteen years as a Member of Parliament is a growing respect and support for our armed forces and their families. I believe that awareness of the sacrifices made by our service personnel and the pressures on those they leave behind has increased. One sign of this is the growing numbers of people, including young people, attending the annual Remembrance services in our local area year-by-year. As a nation we know that we should be looking after those who serve in this way and this is often called the ‘Military Covenant’. This is the understanding that those who are willing to lay down their lives for their country should be properly looked after when they return. One positive change that has already been made by the Government is that the ‘operational allowance’, which is a lump sum payment made at the end of a period of active service on the front line, has recently been doubled. Another is that the children of service families will qualify for the new ‘pupil premium’ which is additional school funding to help their schools provide extra support. But the ‘Military Covenant’ is about more than the terms and conditions of serving soldiers and includes how we treat people after they have left the armed forces when ex service personnel can often have particular needs. To make sure that the Government takes this commitment seriously, the Prime Minister has now set up a group of ministers, of which I have been appointed vice-chair, to oversee the implementation of the Military Covenant across government. This group will look at everything from the health and housing needs of ex service personnel to benefits and jobs issues. I would therefore be interested to know what you think should be the priorities for looking after our ex service men and women and their families? If you have any comments please send them to the special e-mail address that I have set up for this purpose – militarycovenant@stevewebb.org.uk Please feel free to forward this e-mail to other local residents who you think might be interested in commenting. I look forward to receiving your comments and will report back to all recipients of this e-mail with a summary of the replies that I receive. With best wishes, Steve Webb MP |
